1378 km (so named after the length of the border between east and west gemrany) will be presented october 3rd, the 20th anniversary of east and west germany’s reunion.
so…too soon, maybe?
the game, called 1378 km, depicts the guards who shot east german escapees when they attempted to scale the? berlin wall? between 1961 and 1989. game players can be guards or the runaways. you can find more details about the game here, and check out the trailer here.
in reality, the guards did shoot about 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 people, and many of their mourners are alive and well.
it almost looks…well…not fun. kind of sad and intense, really.
jens stober, who created the game as a school project, seems like he’s approaching it with an historic eye. he’s not even planning to sell it commercially. but without even seeing the game, folks in germany are calling it unacceptable and tasteless.
perhaps, because it’s a video game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it could be seen as making light of a very recent wound. but while the survivors’ pain in germany is very real, how exactly is this different from films depicting the same thing? only, films would actually profit from it?
yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jens is picking at a very fresh wound. but judging strictly by the trailer, the game seems quite powerful. a lone armed border guard avatar hovers over the berlin wall and a vast landscape to a very emotional soundtrack. a woman attempts to climb the wall. and, spoiler alert: there’s a gunshot. |
