Three games are available for your late afternoon couch napping and viewing pleasure.? In Denver, the Jets will try to become the first team in the last fifty years to go five games without a single turnover.?
In 2002, both the Jets and the Titans started 1-4 and reached the playoffs.? 2002 was a pretty wild year in the AFC;the AFC East and AFC West played each other head to head and every team finished with 8 or more wins.? The Jets were able to get it going after a horrible start, and won every remaining division game to ultimately win a three-way tiebreaker with the Patriots and Dolphins.? Basically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the rest of the pack also came back to the Jets by knocking each other off.? The Titans, meanwhile, saw the schedule soften up a bit, as the AFC South/North were not as strong.? The Titans also had both games against the Colts remaining, and swept those.
In 2004, the Packers started 1-4.? The NFC was pretty weak that year (ultimately, two teams made the playoffs at 8-, and though they were struggling, only 7 teams in the NFC had a winning record, including the 3-1 Lions.? Six other teams had only one win as well, so they didn’t have to leap frog several teams.? The Packers also had both head to head games against the Vikings remaining, and they won both to win the division at 10-6.
In 1993, the Oilers started 1-4, but none of those games were against division opponents.? The Oilers would win their final 11 games and earn a first round bye, sweeping all of their division opponents.
In 1992, the Chargers shot themselves in the foot a lot to start, throwing?11 interceptions, and allowing a punt return touchdown in an 0-4 start.? Humphries turned it around, and the Chargers reeled off 11 wins in their final 12 games to win the division.
Both of these teams have several things going for them if they hope to turn it around.? Minnesota has all of their games against Chicago and Green Bay remaining, and Dallas only has the one loss on the road at Washington within the division.? Both teams, then, have far more important games in the division to come, and those are more “must win” than this one, because they can close the gap in a hurry if they go on a streak in the division.? The NFC looks like the slightly weaker conference, so I don’t think either team is at a significant disadvantage ability-wise.? I’m not saying that the loser of this game is going to the playoffs, but I don’t think they are out of it.? It will probably take 10 wins (9 is an outside possibility on tiebreakers), and these teams will just have to go out and win several in a row. [photo via Getty]
It’s been a weird season for the Jets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as I don’t think many would have thought they would be 4-1 if they knew how inconsistent the Jets would be on pass defense.? The Broncos will test that defense again today.? In the Bay Area, the Raiders and 49ers play.? San Francisco is?a sizeable favorite despite coming in at 0-5.? The Raiders won their last game despite being significantly outgained, and look to go to 3-3.
The game that will get the most national attention, though, involves 1-3 teams.? We all like to gawk at that side of the road accident, and the Cowboys and Vikings have given us plenty to rubberneck.? It should be a fiery matchup, as both of these division winners from a year ago are needing a win to get their playoff hopes in drive.? It has been touted as an elimination game in the media,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I’m not so sure.? We know that it is extremely rare for 1-4 teams to recover and make the playoffs (only five teams have done it since 1990), but I’m not sure we should be comparing either of these teams with the likes of the 2001 Panthers or the expansion Houston Texans.? Here’s a look at those five teams and what they had going for them. |
