I’m going to do a post on this, but I just wanted to briefly mention it. Two days ago, I pointed out that?for the ten seasons since 1969?in which?the Chiefs have been 2-0, they have been outpassed in those 20 games (20 wins, nfl sales, no losses) by 833 yards. A reasonable comment was made suggesting the reason is because teams are trying to catch up. However, that leads to the inescapable conclusion that on average winning teams get out-passed.
COOL FACTOID ANSWER: Philadelphia (7). The next closest is New England (6).

The one constant in the NFL – Change!?

As I pointed out a couple days ago, the Chiefs have been 2-0 now ten times since the Championship season of 1969. In none of the other cases have they won a single playoff game. Because that’s such a strange statistic (it seems to me), I decided to look at all other teams in the NFL since the merger in 1970 and see how many times they won a playoff game and started the season 2-0.

The big stories with the Chiefs continue to be too much Cassel and not enough Charles. I’ve dealt with both, so I’m going to ignore those issues for now. Instead, I’ve got a few odds and ends that I think are worthy of commenting upon.

Interestingly, the first of the best teams had a +618 margin while the worst team had a -619 margin. That’s as you might expect. However, after that, it’s not so clear. In both cases, two of the five went against expectations.
By the time Tuesday rolls around, everybody and their sister-in-law has updated their NFL power ratings.? Listed below are?the 30 teams and five ranking systems.
I'm not sure what NBC has flowing through the air-conditioning ducts, but I hope it at least makes them feel good.

NFL Power Rankings
I decided to take a quick look at it for Kansas City only – and even then just the best teams and the worst teams.
I’ll get back to this issue at a later date.
Here’s another similar item. Coming into the season most people thought New Orleans, Indianapolis, New England and Green Bay were the best four teams in the league – and they may prove to be before it is over. Keep in mind, nfl sales, Green Bay had a 6-10 record as recently as 2008. New Orleans was 3-13 in 2005. Indy and New England were 6-10 and 5-11 respectively in 2001.

Only one season did they have a combined winning record and that was by only two wins (2008, 65-63).
As you can see below, Dallas has done it 10 times since 1969. Kansas City has done it zero – the same as Detroit and Houston. Of course, the Texans have only had eight seasons and have yet to even make the playoffs. Detroit has actually had ten 2-0 starts over this period to the Chiefs nine. So, in one sense their futility (not winning a playoff game for any of the ten seasons) is worse. Then again,us football, ten 2-0 starts is better than nine! Still, the odds are the Chiefs will not win a playoff game in 2010 and by doing so, will tie Detroit on the futility scale.
There are eight teams that are 2-0 right now. Here are the last 7 years with the winning percentage of those eight.
Fortunes change in the NFL and it’s oftentimes when you least expect it. Indianapolis was 3-13 in 1998, but 13-3 the following season! New Orleans was 3-13 in 1999 and 10-6 the next season. New England was 5-11 in ’01, but 11-5 in ’02. Green Bay was 4-12 in 2005, but 13-3 two years later.
If the best teams in the league today have gone through difficult times in the relatively recent past, it gives hope to the Chiefs.

What also strikes me on this list is that the expansion teams (apart from Houston) have all had at least two seasons of 2-0 starts with a playoff victory despite far fewer seasons in which to do it.

COOL FACTOID QUESTION: Which franchise has the most seasons since 2000 (inclusive) when they won at least one playoff game?
