Mallett will be without his favorite target, though, as wide receiver Greg Childs (46 catches, 659 yards, 6 touchdowns) is not expected to play against South Carolina.
Spurrier added that his defensive coaches were “working overtime” in an effort to come up with a game plan for Mallett, but he reiterated that keeping the football on offense will be key to the Gamecocks’ success.
That’s scary good …
Saturday’s kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT and will be televised nationally on ESPN.? The Razorbacks enjoy an 11-7 series edge over the Gamecocks, including a 33-16 blowout win a year ago in Fayetteville. Depending on the betting service you use, the Gamecocks are favored by anywhere between 3-4 points … which is basically the standard home field advantage.
No. 19 South Carolina (6-2, 4-2 SEC) will need its young hero to be at peak performance this Saturday when the No. 18 Arkansas Razorbacks (6-2, 3-2 SEC) come to town. Not only is Lattimore’s prolific offensive production (722 yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season) essential when it comes to putting points on the board, but the longer USC can keep possession of the football the less time Arkansas’ quarterback Ryan Mallett will have to pick apart South Carolina’s porous defensive secondary.
“Offensively, if we can stay on the field and have some of those six and eight minute drives that we’ve been fortunate to have earlier this year against Alabama and against Georgia that would certainly give us a better chance,” Spurrier said.
As far as we’re concerned, the best play of Marcus Lattimore’s young career at the University of South Carolina went down in the history books as “no play.”
This “non-play” – which few people noticed and which has since been forgotten – nonetheless embodies everything that USC fans have come to expect from Lattimore, the most heralded recruit in the history of the Gamecock program. He showed awareness, agility, acceleration and his patented authoritative running style – which turns losses into short gains, short gains into mid-sized runs and mid-sized runs into 15-20 yard gallops.
So … how will USC try to shut down the 6-foot-6 quarterback?
Wham, bam, thank you ma’am …
That’s for sure. Arkansas is averaging a ridiculous 360 passing yards per game to lead the SEC, while the Gamecocks are giving up a conference-worst 260 passing yards per game. Already this season Mallett has thrown for 2,449 yards and 18 touchdowns – completing 66.4 percent of his passes.
“They’re the best passing team in the conference,” USC head coach Steve Spurrier said this week.
It occurred during the first quarter of the Gamecocks 38-24 win over Tennessee last Saturday, when the true freshman phenom snared a bad snap that ricocheted off of the helmet of quarterback Stephen Garcia. Within milliseconds, Lattimore had plucked the ball out of mid-air, tucked it under his arm and pounded past the Tennessee defense for what appeared to be the game’s first touchdown.
Although an illegal shift penalty against the Gamecocks ended up nullifying the play (and the score), Lattimore’s quick reaction probably saved a touchdown going the other way.

“You gotta rush the passer, get some hands in his face, get some tipped balls if you can,” Spurrier said. “Try to cover, try to give them some different looks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], maybe some blitz schemes or some fake blitz schemes.” |
