??The season is four weeks old, but North Plainfield and Somerville have yet to experience their first Mid State 39 Raritan Division game. Tonight, the two ancient Somerset County rivals will open the divisional season against each other at Brooks Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Mid State Raritan has turned into an interesting mix of contenders with Skyland Conference holdovers Delaware Valley, North Plainfield and Somerville at the top of the list with newcomers Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Voorhees and Warren Hills chasing.
?
North Plainfield is 3-0, having knocked off Rahway, Hillside and Cranford. Somerville, 1-2, has lost to Plainfield and A.L. Johnson the past two weeks after a season-opening victory over Hillside. ?Last year, the Pioneers went to Krausche Field and punished the Canucks 35-13 on their way to a Valley Division title.
Somerville junior quarterback Johnny Betz threw for over 200 yards and four touchdowns.
?”"We were so geared up to stop the run that he killed us with the pass,” said North Plainfield coach Bobby Lake. “”If we don’t pressure him he’s going to be accurate. He’s the best quarterback, the best passer we’ve seen. We have seen kids who can run, but not throw it. If we commit to the run…”
Somerville is known as a run-first team. Senior Nick Ulassin has scored 42 of the team’s 46 points, catching passes of 48 and 21 yards from Betz for touchdowns in a 33-26 loss at A.L. Johnson of Clark.??”"We’re still primarily a running team,” said Somerville coach Greg Arakelian, adding that junior running back Ben Camaco and senior fullback Mark Mercado have been ?effective. Lake said that he’s been impressed with Pioneer end Matt Constantino.
“”They spread it around,” Lake said.
?Like Somerville, North Plainfield has a dangerous, versatile player in senior Vincent Green, who’s rushed for three touchdowns and returned a kickoff last week 90 yards in a 28-14 win at Cranford.
? “”They are an empty set team, the run tosses, counters and they go into a shotgun and throw it,” said Arakelian. “”It’s an offense we don’t see a lot of and you add Green to the mix.”
?? Both teams’ success is centered on how they run the ball. But, like Somerville,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Canucks have been throwing it a bit. Senior Erich Fredericks, who has run the ball well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has thrown touchdowns to Taj Belfield, Adrian Gonzalez and Marquis Rawlings. But none of the passes were over 10 yards. Fredericks has run for three touchdowns.
“”The quarterback is greatly improved,” Arakelian said.
? North Plainfield has a veteran line that has played well — junior tackle Zach Dardignac and junior defensive end Kyle Belle have been applying pressure and sophomore ?linebacker Chris Smith returned a fumble 45 yards for a score against Cranford.
Somerville senior two-way lineman Derek Sierchio has been outstanding, his coach said. |
